The Staff Room

September 10, 2007

Walked in, said good morning, signed in “The Book” to show later teachers that I was here early. I have a love/hate relationahip with that book. You showcase your punctuality but at the same time you have people arriving before you, sparking that “I wanna be here first!!” competitive feeling, wanting everyone to see your signature first thing in the morning. Then when that happens, you end up sitting alone in the staff room, yawning and wishing you’d hit that damned snooze button when you had the chance.

Walked into the staff room… said my hellos and good mornings, sat at my desk and pulled out my laptop and its wire. Plugged everything in, opened iTunes and Adobe Photoshop. Turned on some Corinne Bailey Rae, India.Arie and Zero 7, turning down the volume just a tiny bit, enough to create some calm soothing background music and sitting back on my swivley twirlie chair…

I just sat there and stared at our staff room… man, it’s so messy and crappy… I really really really want to re-design the whole room… here’s what I want to do:

1- Re-paint it since it’s pink and it makes me feel like a 5 year old… maybe paint it light blue or off-white with a small light design or maybe even wallpaper, something feminine and light but won’t make me feel like a 3 year old ballet dancer…

2- Make all the desks match, all with working drawers and locks and remove the old crappy wooden desks…

 Click for more….

3- Everybody gets a comfy twirlie chair so no more hard-backed class chairs that make you forget you have a butt..

4- Put a big library section on the side for all the dictionaries, thesaureses and hopefully more novels or books for dyslexic students.. Maybe even convince the teachers to put all their exercises in those clear folders, so some teachers can photocopy and re-use them.. that’ll even look better in the library since they’re going to be labelled and color-coordinated (i’m getting giddy just thinking about it!!)..

5- Put a big comfy couch (or maybe two, if there’s space) next to it.. the color matches the paint of course.. a tiny coffee table in front of them for the staff phone.. (it’s stuck behind the Senior Teacher’s desk and when she’s not there we have to twirl her chair around and get stuck behind it in order to pick up the damned fon)..

6- Which reminds me, get a new phone for the staff room! A phone that wouldn’t make you want to punch kittens in the face everytime it rang.. one that doesn’t have a cord that’s in love with itself and gets tangled so much, ur face has to be stuck to the numbers everytime you pick up..

7- Have the “badala” phone numbers’ list on the staff phone’s coffee table, taped down and covered with a plastic table cover so nobody loses it or colors on it..

8- Make the kitchen/food area easily cleanable by putting one big table with drawers for all the coffee cups/mugs/tea bags/sugar/tiny spoons/extra plastic bags and other kitchen shenanigins that are always forgotten on the worktop and make the place so messy and sticky… and a drawer for small cloths would be great, just wet those cloths and wipe the worktop…

9- Design and install an “island” for the middle of the staff room for all the files/books/extra board markers/extra red pens/extra pencils.. easily organized and cleaned, especially for exam times when we stay at school til 5 just to correct all those classes on time… now THAT’s when the couches would be comfy, change of place would make the day less boring..

10- Maybe have tall stools around the island? so nobody gets tired from standing..

11- Remove all the old useless student paintings (remember when the painting would be really good and the teacher would insist on keeping it, I HATED THAT, I wanted to show off my art at home, not leave it at school so they can be hung in staff rooms where teachers who think about re-designing the room want to throw them away), and have the clean painted walls covered with just one big calendar for the whole school year and maybe some of the certificates the department recieves from the school…

12- Clean our white board and get all matching magnets, NO broken ones or magnets shaped like fruit!!

13- Remove both clocks that don’t work and still insist that it’s either 12:36 PM or 5:08 AM… Get one big clock from Ikea

*sighs* I can dream… especially since the staff would laugh in my face if i even suggest new paint.. i’ll definitely get one of those “It’ll cost too much money” excuses.. I know that the whole staff is made out of expatriots and that they might be transferred or travelling at any time, so why pay good money on a staff room they wouldn’t fully enjoy?…

Hmm.. General question:

Would an all-kuwaiti staff still re-design their staff room?

I wouldn’t know since I’ve never been in an all-kuwaiti staff room (i think the only all-kuwaiti staffs are usually for the Social Studies/ Ejtema3iyat subject)…

  1. I say concentrate on teaching

  2. LOL on purge… That was mean.

How can one concentrate if they are not comfortable?
    I say mess and redecorate.

  3. :) Well at least you wanna change it & create a comfy atmosphere as you said :) You ARE a good teacher, cuz if you ain’t happy you won’t be able to teach…..

    P.S: Pink is nicceeee

  4. Purg: *kicks your ass* How can i teach when there are no students? Students start attending tommorow, so unless i’m going to teach the other teachers, i happen to look around the room and imagine a comfortable environment to work in… And you say you’re not mean?

Blue Dress: believe me, i WANT to re-decorate, there just won’t be enough time, money or encouragment…

Chikapappi: lol NOT the pink in our staff room :p

  5. you should go back in time. become an evil scientist or sum’…ya3ni that’s the best i could think of right now.

  7. I think an all Kuwaiti staff wouldn’t be in the staffroom. If they were, they wouldn’t rethink of designing it. They probably wouldn’t care less. I’m only assuming.. you probably know better! :p

  8. 7abeebte , alaah y3eenich , my sis is going to be a teacher next year enshalah and she plans to change kuwaiti schools so she has dreams just like u :)

yaraab enshalah kil el teachers in our schools ykonoon just like U mashalah

  9. What’s your problem with pallet dancers?

  10. Zahoor: Mad scientist? wouldn’t that require big wild white hair and crazy glasses? hmmm.. i think i prefer being a teacher lol

Princess: kilina emdawmeeeeeeeen, bs students aren’t!
oo yal shereera enshalla we change the staff phone before you provide punchable kittens :p
and i know Purg’s mean, hence the kick in the bum.

N.: hmm.. and all-kuwaiti staff would HAVE to be in the staff room one time or another :p

    q8bride: enshallaa :D

Intlxpatr: I don’t have a problem with “pallet” dancers, “ballet” dancers i don’t like :p
the pink paint makes me feel like i’m constantly late for a recital with my tutu at the dry cleaners lol

  11. You have a point there! :p

  12. oh dear god such a mess !!

but i would say yeah .. its all the same .. i got this girl in work .. she is such a mess .. she have lost so many papers .. files .. god .. and her office is always messed up .. i think it really depends on the person himself !

  13. no

    ma3alalih 1 can dream
maybe u can change ur work area
get urself a new desk, blah blah
    hang a calindar
and HOPE the others will follow suit

  14. btw that was me
bs i was using my sisters pc :S

  15. You can clean your office, but you have to be sneaky about it. Move one thing at a time, either before everybody else arrives, or after everybody else leaves. Or, just do it right in front of everyone over lunch, but make it look as if you are just idling.

It has been like that in a couple of places I have worked. You can guarantee everybody else you work with thought the same as you when they first joined, but did not feel at home enough to tidy it themselves, and eventually lost the will to do it.

  16. Ramadan mubarak sweetie :)

  17. Sij, the furniture of a place and how its positioned makes a HUGE difference. I hate how a lot of the furniture in schools are broken or damaged.

Try talking to you co-workers, just taking one saturday morning (or the dead hours of the afternoon) to paint the room and adjust it a bit. They might actually be willing to. If the school can give you some money, even if it’s a low budget (and i know for a fact that they have a good amount of money for new furniture every year) you can go to cheap places and get some shelves and stuff. Check out Ikea’s as-is section, could help.

    Gluck in that! =)

  18. Wow, thats a lot todo! How messed up is this office? So basically you made us read the changes you want, but you wont be able to make these? What a waste! :) I think you can reduce the amount of changes and pitch the idea, they might be open for a change, at least to be better organized… Well good luck with that.

  19. After reading the last couple of comments, I have to comment again. The more senior staff have obviously learned not to care, and they will not appreciate you suggesting a) they should do some work, or b) that the way they have been living their lives is not up to your high standards. Just potter around cleaning things, and apologise, and make it out like it is some disfunction of yours.

  20. I love redecorating!!!! Do it do it!! Can I help??? :D

  21. N.: hehehe i know :p

Navygirl: okay, depends on the person, bs at least having a place to organize things like papers and files should be encouragement to start organizing everything..

Pheonix: i’m DEFINITELY going to get a new desk…

Shale: lol i thought of the sneaking around technique, but whether the changes get rave reviews or rants, it’s always the maid who cleans up at the end of the day who gets blamed/thanked.. ma yenfa3 :p
and yes, the changes may not be appreciated, and all our busy schedules are going to be an excuse.. other than the money part..

Chika: 7beeeebti mashkoooora, Embarak 3alaich el shahar :**

Dishevelled: I could try babe, but the afternoon is NEVER dead at school lol and asking for money from the school when we’ve just started the year is like asking if we could murder the principal’s first child :p

Patrick: lol it’s really messed up :p

Vixen: I’d definitely hire you, but i ain’t got no cash and nobody’s going to be as enthusiastic as i am about it :p

  22. No cash! I volunteeeer!
